1995 Keenan Cabernet Napa

Discovered in a corner of my storage. Properly stored since release. Not decanted. Served in Lennox Tuscany series Grand Bordeaux stems. Paired with some Gouda and medium cheddar cheese. I must have picked this up on impulse a few years ago. I remember drinking the 1997 a couple of years ago and my impression was favorable but I don’t remember it as being particularly profound. Alcohol 13.5%.

Color: Deep and dark purple. It’s nearly opaque in the large stems. No real legs to speak of, leaves a sheet on the glass when swirled. Some stains from sediment are visible on the side of the bottle

Nose: Blackberry jam with a hint of cedar. The nose improved after it was open for a couple of hours.

Taste: Medium bodied. Good concentration. Dark berry fruit with some cigar box tones. A hint of leather. Some pleasant, sweet black fruit. It opened up a bit after a while and was enjoyable. Still showing some substantial tannin, it could use some additional cellar time.

Finish: Medium length. The tannins are a bit drying on the end. It seems to have enough fruit to outlast them.

Overall impressions: A pleasant drinking wine. It lacks the complexity it should have to reach into the 90+ point range. If you have some of this, I would recommend at least a year or two additional cellar time to tame some of the tannin. I would say drink in 2-4 years for maximum enjoyment.

GA points 88.

Gene & Mr. A-Overly tannic. I don't think those stemmy tannins ever go away(to wit-1986). Keenan has a great property on Spring Mountain. He should have Bob Foley(Pride) make his wine.
