  • 2004 Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Boisrenard - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (10/26/2009)
    – popped and poured –
    – tasted non-blind over 2 days –

NOSE: Australian black licorice; black cherry; a bit savory with a hint of smoke. Day 2: dark fruits - plum; pretty tight (tighter than Day 1); hint of leather.

BODY: medium bodied; fine particulate matter; magenta-ruby color of medium-deep depth.

TASTE: mirrors NOSE: black licorice; a bit spicy - oak; well-balanced; black cherry with a background hint of strawberry; 14.5% alc.; hint of leather; not funky; a bit tannic – good grip; medium-length finish (35-40 sec.). Day 2: tannic (moreso than Day 1); hint of anise; garrigue; bit more closed than Day 1, although the finish is a bit longer today (45-52 sec.); spicy; plums and figs; still needs serious time. Overall, this is really nice – it’s not overblown, and seems to have the structure to age well.

    B: 50, 5, 12, 18, 8 = 93 (93 pts.)

I tried a few of the 2004s at a tasting recently and thought they mostly needed another decade in the bottle, some more. What's your opinion of the drinking window for this wine? Thanks

Just one more sip.

For my palate, starting 2014. I prefer my wines "moderately aged" -- at that stage where there's about a 50/50 balance (give or take) between primary and tertiary characteristics.
