I had this in lieu of champagne along with some Roquefort cheese on slices of walnut/raisin bread.

The pairing was fantastic. The 1995 Delice is a dessert wine in the style of a great Sauternes. The wine has matured into a deep gold/light caramel color. The bottle had been sleeping quietly in my passive basement. Although the temps were in the low 60's, I had put the bottle in the fridge the day before. Popped and poured. Cork was in perfect condition. I poured half a bottle into the glass and allowed to warm up a bit. Ripe tropical fruits of pineapple and mangoes and apricots with a touch of golden delicious apples for acidity. The viscosity was like that of maple syrup -- thick, rich. Fantastic and long finish. Amazing evolution from what it was 10 years ago. I would definitely look for this from Phelps in the future. 95+ points, easy.

Interesting TN. I have not had this wine from J. Phelps. Have you tried their Eisrebe dessert wine before? It is made from the Scheurebe grape. Do they make this wine every vintage? Thanks for the TN.

I did a search and it looks like they made it in 1995 and 1997 but not since.

After tasting the wine, I immediately went to the internet to see if 1) Phelps still made and sell it, and 2) if any retailer or auction place still carried it because I wanted more of this stuff. Unfortunately, this wine is no longer made by Phelps which is too bad for us. (I think it's because the botrytis doesn't get set in a consistent manner in their vineyard.)The price wasn't cheap -- $40 for a half-bottle back in 1998. Being pretty new to wine back then and having a very limited budget, I only bought 2 bottles. Oh well ... It is worth seeking out if you can find one.

I did see their Eisrebe dessert wine, but I have not tried it yet. I may do so when I am in the area in a couple of weeks. It sounds like its made in the style of ice wines where the grapes are commercially frozen (versus having the grapes freeze on the vines as its done in Germany and Ontario).
