I work for a quality distributing house here in Charlotte, NC and this my notes from our dinner, Dec. 7, 2002....
Bollinger R.D. 1985 - elegant on the nose w/ hints of vanilla, citrus and nutmeg?, still quite bright on the attack, it gave citrus, nuts, and hints of butterscotch w/ a med/long finish and nice cleansing acids. Pleasantly firm to be 17! Gorgeous....
Joesph Drouhin Le Montrachet "Marquis de Laguiche" 1998 - Very young and still quite one-dimensional on the nose, it did give honey, mineral, and a strong matchstick aroma. It tasted of muted stone fruits, new wood, and a strong mineral component that is common to this site. Finishes with noticeable tannin. Nowhere near ready. Could be great way down the road. Tasted from Magnum.
Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir Vertical
Panther Creek Shea Pinot Noir, 1999 - a defiant "new world" pinot from every angle, this wine smelled and tasted of dark cherries, black raspberries and new wood. Back end of the palate left a "Slather" of oak on the tongue w/ firm tannins. Parker says 93, I say 88. Lay off the oak.....
Shea Wine Cellars Shea Pinot Noir, 2000 - Much clearer in the glass than last year, a beautiful garnet hue. Very classic aromas of red/black cherries and fresh turned earth. Restrained on the palate, nice texture, still very closed. Will be a stunner in about 2-3 yrs. As burgunian as they come from Oregon. Nice wine.
Ken Wright Cellars Shea Pinot Noir, 2001 - Almost a dead ringer for cru Beajolais, say a moulin-a-vent (smells carbonic). Very jazzy on the nose with penetrating aromas of red raspberry, with hints of crushed cherries. Remains jazzy on the palate, delivering red fruits galore, with moderate tannin and acid. Lacking secondary nuance at this stage, but is already drinking well out of the gate. A joy to drink. Try N-2006
