No worries. PH and I have the same first name anyway and I have been called much worse.

Rolodex error! Sorry about that LB. Definitely was a result of the same first name. Great to see you last night. I had a blast! Looking forward to doing it again soon! Cheers, Otis

Glas to see the Lagrange and Lascombes are showing well. They are pretty good QPR's (as far as Bordeaux is concerned), IMO. Cheers. I may have to open a sticky this month. My head almost exploded the first time I tried the 2003 Lafaurie-Peyraguey. Tracked it up to late 2010, so it's been awhile. I wonder how she's doing without me? 2003 Phelan Segur - darkly colored, almost impenetrably so. Aromas of currants and smoke. Creamy entry. Flavors of plums, cherries and an interesting dry vermouth note on the finish. Slightly drying, shortish finish. Drinking well now.

2003 Château D'Aiguilhe - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Côtes de Castillon (1/19/2013) PnP at a restaurant. Some earthiness upfront, with plum and currant fruit on a medium body frame and medium minus acidity. The fruit has faded some since my last bottles, but I actually liked it better. Leaves the tannins standing out more with a little bite on the finish, though was softer about 45 min after opening. Given how much the fruit faded in the last 16 mos, I would recommend drinking these soon. (90 pts.) Champagne for my real friends and real pain for my sham friends. - Tom Waits

I opened the Gruaud Larose earlier this week: Decanted for just over 3 hours before having with grilled filet. Had a quick taste before decanting and noticed a good deal of acidity from light red fruit. Aroma is strawberry, plum, and tobacco. Taste hits with some tart red cherry right off the bat and it's tough to get much else out of it. There is a very slight hint of some cocoa that hits after the mid-palate. I wonder about what is going to happen over time with this tartness. Not too tannic, probably about what you would expect from this at the time.

I opened another Fombrauge. I've gone through a case and a half of it and still have a few bottles. It's a nice wine. "Wine, one sip of this will bathe the drooping spirits in delight beyond the bliss of dreams. Be wise and taste." - Milton

COMMANDERIE DE BORDEAUX: 2003 LEFT BANK DINNER - Pastis - Vancouver, BC (21/01/2013) The Vancouver chapter of the Commanderie de Bordeaux assembled at Pastis for their annual horizontal to take a look at the 2003 vintage. This was my first foray into one of these 10 year post-vintage dinners. On this evening we tasted only wines from the left bank, which in general was much more consistent than the Merlot dominated wines from the right bank. While there were definitely a few misses on the night, in general the wines showed quite well and avoided the overripe and pruny characteristics that have been thrown around in regards to this vintage. Smoked Rabbit, Bacon, Creamy Cabbage, Buckwheat Garganelli
Pan Seared Veal Sweetbread, Brasied Veal Short Rib, Pea Puree, Chantrelle Mushrooms
Mystery Wine
Roasted Rack of Lamb, Lamb Tongue Ragout, Root Vegetables, Roquefort Sauce
Pineapple Financier, Honey Yogurt Mousse

Opened my last 2003, a bottle of Fombrauge. Sure glad I held on to that for about 6 years. What a rewarding experience.

We had a 2003 Faugeres on Friday night. Very modern styled, nice nose but a bit muted on the finish.

2003 Cos D'Estrounel decanted 30 minutes prior to drinking. The nose is quite nice. Full fruity, blueberry jam mixed with some cinnamon spices. The taste unforutnately didn't follow, tastes of squid ink, wet tobacco and some hidden red fruit. The swirl around in the glass helped coax some currants out but not much. The wine felt shut down unfortunately. This is my sig -> www.brownteacup.com www.wsqwine.com (Wine distributor)

In front of me tonight is 2003 Lascombes. While I agree there is a new world opulence to it, there's no way it can be confused for a California cab. The nose is still youthful and restrained, but there is a nice waft of Margaux perfume there. The palate shows somewhat restrained cassis with a rich vein of minerality, and plush tannins on a lingering finish. This wine is in a great place right now. 94 for me. Earlier this evening, we had the '03 Carbonnieux blanc. This is also in a beautiful place right now. 93 for me Stay thirsty my friends.

This was really nice as a young wine, so I don't blame you at all. My notes show that it went through a disjointed phase for a while, but it is really singing tonight. Stay thirsty my friends.

I have notes from '08, '09, and '10 and liked it throughout its drinking life (at least when I was drinking it). I should just make it a habit to grab a few bottles every vintage in hopes of letting some of them age. "Wine, one sip of this will bathe the drooping spirits in delight beyond the bliss of dreams. We had the 2003 Lascombes in the past week and I agree with you tasting note. However, I think this has a lot more to offer and would rate it 90-91 now with significant upside in 3-5 years. It's well balanced, but the dark fruit comes across as a solid block of fruit and is just not giving the secondary and tertiary notes I would expect.

Had a few bottles of 03 Ormes de Pez, Ste Estephe cru bourgeois last night. I am down to last couple of bottles from the case. These are pleasant soft and fruity, with definitive wet earth notes, integrated tannins and a pleasant finish. This isn't getting any better, time to drink up. I would say about 86 pts. Would agree with the prediction on Pontet Canet, really not anywhere near ready yet. BirD **************************** must not buy any more wine, must not buy any more wine... Fair enough...but I disagree. Compare this vintage to a vintage like 2000 or 2005 and tell me there isnt a significant difference. I am not terribly experienced with Cali Cabs because I just dont like them very much, but this bottle and alot of the 03's remind me of them. The 03' Lascombes was a nice wine, and I have a 6 pack of them, but just not my style. And I will be shocked if it improves a great deal....I hope Im wrong! ------------- Say NO to Shiraz!

I don't have any 2000 Lascombes, so I can't comment on that. The estate was bought between the 2000 and 2003 vintages, and the winemaking team (and the facilities?) were completely overhauled. I believe Michel Rolland and/or Stephane Derenencourt or one of those "celebrity" winemakers was brought in for consultation. This would explain a huge difference between 2000 and 2003, over and above the weather conditions. I suspect the term "Parkerized" applies to this estate as much as anything in the Medoc, so I can understand your point. Be that as it may, I still think I could pick this as a Margaux if put into a blind lineup with other Bdx and New World Cabs. As for the 2005 vintage, I haven't opened any yet, but the elements I mentioned above were still in play for '05, so I would be more surprised if there was a significant change in style. I will say that the '03 and '04 are surprisingly similar. Stay thirsty my friends.

You are much better taster than me if you could pick that up as Bordeaux in a blind tasting. Id have a tough time with most 03's. I like the 04' better than the 03'....more bordeaux like for me. I tasted the 05' on release and it blows both out of the water IMO, and is slightly less "parkerized" and more typical to me. I think if you like the 03' you should love the 05'. I love the floral component of typical Margaux wines as well....but I didnt pick up much of it in the 03' Lascombes, but can appreicate it in the 04' and 05'. I also got some oak in the 03' which wasnt present in the 04 or 05'. If you enjoy the floral aspect of Margaux, try a 04' Malescot, classic Margaux nose. ------------- Say NO to Shiraz!

I assure you that in a blind tasting and you were to line up a bunch of 04 cabs and a bunch of 03 bordeauxs that there are definitely members of this board who can easily pick out bdx or napa. It wouldn't even be a question about it. The ones I have trouble picking out or some of the super tuscans from bdxs but napa to bdx is pretty much still night and day regardless of "parkerization" or not.
