Teri and I did a mini-Horizontal this evening of a couple Novy Syrah's I picked up locally for $25 each (for a going out of business sale).
1999 Novy Page-Nord Napa Valley
Typically dense deep purple syrah color. Nose offers up dark fruits, bacon fat, and menthol. Plush and smooth on the palate with tangy acidity and plenty of tannic structure. Nice long finish. For me this edged out the Garys for near term drinking, but I think the Garys may have the better staying power. Excellent Syrah, but still a baby better in 5 years.
1999 Novy Garys Vineyard
Color is nearly identical to the Page-Nord. Nose is bigger on the bacon/meat side of the spectrum, somewhat backward, but still offering the same dark fruit and less of the menthol. Tannins are more prominent than Page-Nord, and its just a but off balance in comparison (a tad volatile, but just a tad). Really needs more time, drink in no less than 5 years.
