2001 Domaine Pontifical Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (12/25/2012) This estate is made up of about 30 small parcels spread throughout the CdP appellation with differing soil conditions. It has been in Mr. Laget's family since the 1920's. The vines are 45 years in age. The blend for his wines is approximately 75% Grenache and 25% Mourvedre, Syrah, Counoise and Cinsault. The wine is made in a traditional style. The grapes are not destemmed and fermentation occurs in large cement vats before receiving 12 months in small oak barrels. Opened at Christmas. My last bottle. Not decanted but opened 1 hour before dinner. Heavily sedimented. Notes of cherry and a moldy character. Showing some acidity. This wine has seen better days and has started to decline. Drink now if you have any. 86 points. VM | ||
