another request...
I'm at JazzFest the first weekend, so I'll miss your fun-sounding offline.. and all of my so-called friends bagged out on me. Sooo.. what's the best restaurant in town with bar service -- I have no reservations, but I figure since I'm alone I can sit at the bar and eat wonderful food and drink good wine. Thoughts? jim Jim Louderback |

Go to Clancy's on Annunciation and Webster. Has approximately 8 seats. It will be busy during the Fest, but you can always get a great meal at the bar and likely have some fun too.
Great wine list with very reasonable pricing. Try the fried oysters with brie and the smoked soft shell crab. Each screams for a great pinot. Cheers! And remember: Life's too short to drink bad wine. |

Preferred: It's all good. Just defending my southern heritage. Q? are we still trying to meet up at the fairgrounds Friday or any other day? Anyone? if so, I'll post my mobile number, which is also text enabled if anyone wants to hook up. I'm really looking forward to it, as are my broke and allergy-disabled friends. |

Sorry I'll miss you. Going tonight.
If you're staying anywhere near the French Quarter there is a great gallery opening at Hanson Gallery 229 Royal Street on Thursday evening. The southern artists Patterson and Barnes will show their stuff between 5 and 7 p.m. I am Last year Jon Cleary played. This year it's David Torkanowsky. Great fun. I'll be there toting a nice bottle so if you go let me know with another post here and we'll make some arrangements to meet. Cheers! And remember: Life's too short to drink bad wine. |

Man, I go out of town for a few days and all hell breaks loose on the thread!
Preferred, the location will remain Cote Sud. I don't see any reason to change it at this point. But I wanted to let you know that it is not near the French Quarter (nor was our first location), but instead on the other horn of the Crescent City. You can get to it by streetcar, with a little walking on the end, if you lack other transportation. Take the St. Charles line at Canal, get off at St. Charles and Fern, walk down Fern (to your right if you're facing the direction the streetcar was going) two blocks to Maple, and it should be on Maple to your left. If anyone has better directions to offer, feel free. New Orleans is not an easy city to navigate. *********************** http://www.lawineclub.com |

nah, no contentiousness; its all good fun. We'll be cabbing over but thanks for the streetcar info; we might do that instead. We're staying at the Pere Marquette, which I believe is near the streetcar.
So, so far wine list is as follows: Tim <Ft Wayne IN>: Paul Jaboulet Aine C-d-P Les Cedres, not sure the vintage Kate <Southampton, UK> CdP Domaine de la Solitude 2001 Me <Slummin in Napa> not sure Nikki <Shrimpless, UK> White CdP unknown at this point Alex <Toluca, MX> Mystery wine David <Dallas, TX> 01 Guigal CdP This message has been edited. Hey everybody... I'll be at the dinner.. not sure what I'm bringing but I have lots of goodies... probably something from this lot:
Beaucastel (working on a vertical so I have several vintages) 96,97,98 M. Chapotier La Sizeranne and several others... I also have my infamous "mystery CdP" that gets me in trouble.. (because I take the label off due to the fact that it's real cheap and less than 200 cases are produced.. hehe) |

I want to agree with a now-missing sentiment: take a cab if you can. It'll be easier and safer. (Especially for the return trip, when everyone will be little tipsy. Or a lot tipsy.)
I hope to bring a 2001 Clos du Caillou Cotes-du-Rhone-Villages "Les Roches Rondes." I don't have it yet, but that's the plan. Plus an off-theme dessert wine or two. *********************** http://www.lawineclub.com |

Agree wholeheartedly. Call the most reliable taxi company in New Orleans -- United Cab. 522-9771 is the secret handshake number.

Excellent! Cell number noted. Have lots of fun at the 'fest...weather should be good (hot, of course) on Thursday and Friday. Naturally, on Saturday, when I plan to go, they are currently predicting 40% chance of thunderstorms. (Hey, it was 60% this afternoon, so I'll take it!)
I got this description of a little-known act playing Thursday...you gotta love this. Winnsboro Easter Rockers, 1:45 p.m. thusday at the Blues Tent: "This set recreates a little-known spiritual tradition from the Winnsboro area that is typically performed the Saturday night before Easter Sunday. The ceremony involves church members taking rhythmic, rocking steps counterclockwise around long tables, depositing twelve cakes and 12 lighted candles on the tables to represent the 12 disciples." See everyone at the offline. 8pm Friday, Cote Sud, 7918 Maple Street (uptown). Take it easy at the Jazzfest; the Crawfish Monica will still be there on Saturday. *********************** http://www.lawineclub.com |

If there is any interest -- there always is a nice wine tasting at Cork and Bottle wine shop beginning at 4:30 on Thursdays held in conjunction with a Farmer's Market at the recently rennovated American Can Company apartment complex on Orleans Ave. -- about a $5 cab ride from downtown. It's across the street from our house. There are all sorts of hidden gems of restaurants in the area so you can hop from the tasting to a good spot, including Gabrielle, about six blocks away.

Gabrielle is serving Mojitas and Margaritas curbside. Paired with Zap's for the walk home last night, perfecto.
Whatcha'll doing today in the rain? Mango Daiquiris at Liuzza's to watch the lightning and wait for the gates to open...electricity just came back on... |

Sorry for the delayed response...things got busy after Jazzfest.
I may be biased, but I thought the offline was great fun. The restaurant is tiny, but there were 10 seats for 10 people, and the service was fine for a largish group (giving us more time to drink). The food was good. And I was very impressed with the wines that we had...they were a very good group, with nice variety for the region (Rhone). I found a couple of wines that I hope to explore again soon, but alas, no tasting notes--the notepad was left behind in the shuffle of preparation. (Hey, as long as you remember the wine, right?) I think we even got a break on the corkage...it pays to give the waitstaff liberal tastes. One dark spot was that, while there was no problem with people getting a cab from their hotel, on the return trip no cabs could be contacted, and the restaurant informed us that Jazzfest at night was a very bad time to be looking for cabs. Luckily the streetcar line was nearby. All in all, a fun group, good food, great wines. You couldn't ask for more. *********************** http://www.lawineclub.com |
