Hello board!

Myself and a few of the MD offliners have discussed putting together a Wine Spectator golf event and wanted to solicit feedback. Here are our initial thoughts on the setup, all of which are subject to change and suggestions.

To be selfish, frankly, we would host it likely in the Mid-Atlantic area due to accessibility of 3 airports and would like to also explore the option of having a charity involved. DC would be the best option because of the liberal liquor laws. The only potential drawback is lack of public facilities, although some of the private ones do host outings. Cost may be an issue at these locations, however. Virginia would be option #2, but the liquor laws may be an issue. Other surrounding states could also be options, taking into account liquor laws, of course.

The plan would be to have a certain number of foursomes compete in a traditional event. Likely a scramble (even though I HATE scrambles) but with a twist. The thought is to have some type of wine-themed competition within the round. For example, every par 3 would have a mystery wine that you can guess for prizes at the dinner later that evening, etc., etc.

The dinner of course would take place after the round and feature a theme of some kind and, hopefully, contributions from all of those who attend.

The sticky issue is the BYOB. Can we find a location that will house our outing and allow BYOB on both the course and at the dinner? Afterall, what is the use in doing this if we have to drink Yellowtail in the clubhouse?

I would think Fall of this year or Spring/Fall of next would be best, due to weather and wine mixture, availability of interested parties(summer is no go for many due to vacations) and simply from a logistical standpoint.

We would structure it so that all participants would need to pony up entry fees well in advance so we can secure the venue. All the other details, golf format, dinner theme, etc., can be ironed out later.

This is just the VERY early stage of the discussion, and many more details will need to be ironed out.

So, who's in?

We should get on of our sponsors (to be determined) to donate something like a '45 Mouton for a "Hole in One" on a par three!

Anyways, as we discussed I'm very interested and will help with planning/organizing.

Schedule permitting, I'm typically up for golf.
If we are going to get a charity involved, we'll obviously have to pick something that is non-controversial, like the Hillary Clinton campaign. (KIDDING!!!).

The way this is shaping up it looks like it will end up being exclusively a MD offliner event.

I think the rest of the board is intimidated by us!

You never know, I'm up for golf assuming that I'm not in France during the fall.

I know it's still early but what about Keswick Hall at Monticello. Fairly nice course and a great restaurant. But I am interested where ever it winds up. Especially if there is a charity involved.

I'd like to join if the schedule permits. Actually I'm holding a charity golf toutnament at a club in Chesapeake on June 2nd that also allows BYOB. We have openings for teams or this would be easy to duplicate later in the year.

I passed Kylmkev's first message off to my boss who golfs and wines (or maybe whines)in the DC/VA area. He has set some tournaments up in the past so I will see if he has any ideas or could point us in the right direction. If it involves golf and wine he would be interested. As for a charity I would throw in the idea of the U. of MD Infant & Child Loss Center. It is a program that my wife and her sisters sponsor several fundraising events for.

I talked with my boss regarding local DC courses - he suggested Old Hickory near Woodbridge, VA. He is fairly certain that they have run events with wine at each hole. He does not know of any in DC that would work. There are several in MD, but we would be getting tangled in those ever so modern wine laws of MD. He suggested the course at Andrews AFB, if one of the group is a former service member, but he was not certain of the alcohol rules.

He suggested that we could meet at Old Hickory to at least talk with the folks there and see what they could offer, it would give us a starting point.
