Hola, may I get some advice from amigo/as in BA regarding upscale wine bars in Microcenter, or other reasonally accessible (cabs seem cheap) areas from downtown. We will be here for a couple of days, and if anyone would like to get together at a wine-friendly restaurant, would love to try. Also recommendations for a wine store with a good high-end range would be appreciated, but the best (I think) would be to be able to sample wines (esp. from the last WS issue), in flights.

There is a Wine Store called Grand Cru across the street from the Alvear Palace Hotel, that has some nice high end wines. There are also some nice wine stores off of La Florida. As far as wine bars there are a ton. I stayed in Palermo, so I'm not sure about wine bars in MicroCentro.

ebrown,

Thanks for the suggestions - there are so many. We had an interesting cab/malbec/tannat blend (2001) last night, that brought body to the slightly weak cabernet (it was from Salto). I was ppleased that one of my US purchases (Dolium Reserve) is thought of highly here, but continue to find the right malbec (Alto Vista, Luigi Bosco, and Rutini seem on the higher end). We will go to Recoletta today. If in DC, post to taste.

Muchas gracias,

Zinfully, Juan

I didn't actually visit any wine bars while I was in BA because most of the restaurants have excellent wine lists. So, even if you don't make it to a wine bar you can still have a great wine tasting experience.

Zinfully,

You really should have gone to Frappe, a chain with a greater diversity in selection. Most of the prices are (almost) set in BA, with the exception of the Mendoza Wines store right off of Florida, which can really jack the goods. The Grand Cru is really nice, and the staff knowledgable, but it is really small. The closest Frappe is right around the corner.

Wine bars with a high-end selection are hard to find. The Winery on Pellegrini & Liberdad will serve some, and often pours (as does Mendoza).

Does anyone have experience with prices in BA versus the Mendoza wineries, versus back here?
