I am sad to report, Lovitt, one of the best BYOB restaurant establishments in Chicago will be closing its doors June 30.
The restaurant run by Norman & Kristen Six, offered an initmate, eclectic, and wine friendly menu. They are moving to Washington State to start a new resaturant. I will miss this place, but there is hope...they sold the restaurant to thier current sous chef who plans to reopen in Aug-Sept. with a new name and keep with the BYOB tradition. That's too bad that they are closing, but good news that it will reopen.
I would be interested in going one more time, Sat (25th) or Sun (26th) would probably be best for us. P.S. Let me guess...you already have a theme in mind |

While it's too bad that Norman & Kristin are heading west, I was told by Norman that Lovitt's will re-open with a new chef shortly therafter. I think he's a young French guy. Norman was singing his praises big time, saying he was really creative. My understanding is that it will still be BYO.
I'll be out of town next weekend. Otherwise, I'd try and join you. Cheers, Otis |

Okay...Lovitt called me back. For groups on that night, they can only do 6:30 and 8:00 and the biggest they could give us was 8 people. I did make a reservation for us. I took the later one so we aren't rushed to get out b/c I know they move groups along. Hope that's okay with everyone.
Just to confirm: Lovitt 6/25 @ 8 PM Scubarex-2? Jcubed-1 Anwar/Trigirl-2 R2-D2-1 thelostverse-2 Our reservation is full. She told me again that they're filling up fast. According to Metromix, "Michael Carlson, Lovitt's sous-chef, has purchased the eatery and will reopen it as Schwa in mid-August."
It doesn't indicate whether he will be the executive chef or if he is bringing in someone else, but at least the venue will still be available. |

We had a great time Saturday night. Since nobody took any notes, I was hoping Anwar, R2D2, Jcubed and Scubarex could post which wines they brought (and the number) so I could jot down some personal notes.
I brought the 2000 Spring Valley Uriah (#5), but I can't remember anything about the other blind wines other than I remember liking the Spanish ones. |

yes, we are a disorganized lot with out Otis or VinoMe. I especially liked the fact that we blinded them in foil, but did not think to label the foil...

I brought the 88 Coutet, Barsac ... and I liked it.
Excellent environment to relax and chat, I liked the disorganization in our tasting. For the record, the Uriah was voted the overwhelming best red of the night. Followed by the Montevertine |

I brought a 2003 Clos Pepe Chardonnay to start and then tge 1996 Arzuaga Ribera Del Duero Reserva and 1997 Chapoutier Coteaux d'Aix Terra d'Or. Sorry I don't remember the numbers.
There wasn't a bad wine in the group, but the Uriah was my WOTN. Great night! |

Any thoughts on how much life the Uriah has left? I have one more bottle and was figuring to drink either this year or next. Should I be in a hurry?

Plenty of life left in that one. I'd say drinkable for the next several years, if not through the decade. It tasted very, very young that night. I thought 2002 or even younger. I too have one bottle and am in no hurry. |

Thanks for the info R2. I didn't figure I should be in any hurry. Had my second of three last year I believe and it was much better than the first bottle I had. Seemed to have plenty of life left in it back then too.
