This is really shaping up to be quite an offline.

It'll be great meeting members of the MWP again and seeing old friends.

Looking at the numbers, are we looking at 2-3 separate tables and each bring their own, or should we bring 2 x 750mL or magnums. Personally, the former may be more practical since otherwise, the pours are miniscule.
What say ye Bman?

I put our current headcount at 12, which we could probably manage with one table and one bottle per person, as we'd each get two ounces. Last time, we were more (16 I think?) and I invested in a bunch of those nifty plastic automatic one-ounce pour things that are used for spirits and liquers, but I agree that one ounce is pretty small. If we get above 12 people, we can decide then how to proceed.

I've been in touch with a couple of restaurants which I've heard are good. The websites are here:

http://www.foundationrestaurant.com/foundation.htm

http://www.bocado.ca

I've asked for a flat-rate for corkage and menu ideas, and will post again once I have them.

Here's an updated participants list:

DoktaP - 1 (with continuing hopes for 2! )
bman - 2
carriedca-1
a Product Consultant to be named later - 2
mimik - 1
Steve8 - 1
Impulse - 2
KSC02 - 2
Vinaigre - 2

Isn't that a head count of 14 or is the new budget reducing it to 12? Must be inflation.

Indeed! Red Face I'm home sick today with a massive headcold, and have apparently lost the capacity to count to 14.....

Understand the theme: Aged wines (1990's or earlier). Are we declaring or serving blind, mates? Smile

Miss Margaux,
We'd be honoured to have you and your spouse. It will be a pleasure to finally meet you. Hmmmm, now I might have to go deeper into the cellar with all these esteemed attendees.

KSCO2,
Do you have anything in mind? Since this is my "year", I'd be happy to share something you'd be interested in.

Dokta, I'm never at ease making suggestions like that. Red Face Smile

This is, indeed, your year though, and D will be with me. So my (2) selections are a 1991 Cali Cab I've had but never consumed, and a 1986 or 1988 Bordeaux. Just not quite decided yet.

Hi, thanks for including us and it's our honour to finally meet you and attend. I will do my best to bring a couple of good bottles.

Is this blind or are we going to tell what we are bringing? I have not decided yet Frown

Also please advise if we are each bringing Porto? I'm a bit confused.

I am happy to bring whatever is requested as long as I know what everyone else is doing

Bman,

Interesting questions. Blind vs. non-blind?
Surprise or declare? Ports? How many?

Judging by the number of responses, and now that we're up to close to 16, do you think we should have 1 large table, or 2 smaller ones? Personally, the smaller tables work well, providing everyone is open to sharing things that are deemed "exceptional". Otherwise, the pours are miniscule.

Inquiring minds are interested.

KSCO2-leave it to me and I'll try to come up with something of interest.

With this many people, blind becomes difficult to manage imo. Breaking up into two tables is fine with me, just don't ask me to bring a magnum or two bottles of the same wine, because with this theme, I don't have them. Frown

Gotta agree with the logic.

IMO I suggest we declare, when ready, and prepare the lineup. If breaking down into seperate tables, maybe assign it by lottery draw?

Great ideas.

I would like to know if it's settled on 1998 or earlier and that's it or if we are also doing location i.e., bordeaux etc. I'm a little confused as to what was finally decided.

We are ok with whatever the majority decides would just appreciate knowing so I can start thinking at least about what we want to bring.

thanks

Bman-
have you determined the final venue? This would have SOME influence on the varietals brought. Personally, I had a couple of Cabs in mind, however if we were to go to the Spanish themed rest.....

I'd say we find out WHERE we're heading to and we'll break it down from there. Thoughts?

If we're going with a 1998 or older theme, please don't limit it to Bordeaux or I'm in trouble.

I'm going to need a few more days to nail down a venue guys. One place cannot offer a private room, the other one can (Bocado) and in fact can offer a rectangular table, rather than a long table that looks like it could accomodate us all easily and even allow us to talk to each other, not just those beside us. I'm leaning towards the latter but have heard back from neither concerning menu or corkage. The latter is near my office and I will try to visit it tomorrow or Wednesday to eyeball the place for myself and nail down details. I'll post once I have them.

As for theme, I suggested wines from 1998 or earlier, an aged wine theme if you will, and offered a bottle of port and another to be named later.

I agree that now that we are 15 (though my Product consultant friend is not a certainty) it will be difficult for everyone to taste every bottle. That said, there will likely be some real treasures that we will all want to taste, so maybe a blind tasting would not be best. I'm good either way, so please indicate preferences if you have them. Would it make any difference if we were 13?

Here's an updated participants list:

DoktaP - 1 (with continuing hopes for 2! )
bman - 2
carriedca-1
a Product Consultant to be named later - 2
mimik - 1
Steve8 - 1
Impulse - 1
KSC02 - 2
Vinaigre - 2
Miss Margaux - 2

Bman, Up to 14, we are ok for single bottles. 15 and over, it gets stretched but as long as we moderate our pours, we should be fine.

Hi,

Ok, my bad, I thought the place was sorted, but of course if the food is not decided that would matter so I agree KS on that one.

Second, for us personally don't worry, if we don't get to taste everything. We are not difficult in that area. So even if it's open and not blind, either way, we don't expect to taste every bottle of wine if it's not possible.

I do have an idea if I might put one out there. It works for either one large table or two tables. Same principal. Even if the wines are declared before hand, split the wines blind. Have them bagged and on the table, then when they are all accumulated just put 8 for one group and 8 for the other, once they are divided up, they can either be shown or not. This way no one really choses which wines they will taste.

Just a thought, we will go with whatever the majority/group decides.
