Well... as Mrs. W+A is going to make this tasting, looks like a threesome to me. Eek

... also PH, I picked up something for you yesterday for your one-foot-in-the-grave party coming soon. Razz Wink

Skosh,

Do not forget we must also buy a wine to taste. Wink

Looks like we are shaping up for a New World tasting so far. If that is the case, I will bring the Shafer or Viader, then pick out whatever at the store.

As always, look forward to seeing you again!!!

FYI...I'm fairly certain they have the Relentless in the store if you'd like to buy that one and bring something else instead.

Back to the sidelines with me.

Thanks Joe. I assume they would have a recent vintage. I'm thinking a 2000. I had the 2002 in Houston last week again and thought it was wonderful... but also thought I would like to taste again in about 2 years.

Sorry Frisco is too far for you.

They served the 2002 in the wine bar as part of their tasting on March 11th. That's where I had in recently and posted a tasting note on it here as well.

You had better behave yourself mister! And I'm not referring to the threesome either.... In that scenario, you should misbehave as much as you are able!! Razz

I could be wrong, but my vague recollection is that it was the '01 Shafer they had on the shelf.

Our host and others are bringing some really nice wines. If folks wish to have dinner afterwards (either next door or elsewhere), I'd be happy to pick up ze tab. Smile No need to commit; we can play it by ear... Cool

I haven't ever been to this particular location. I assumed we are going to be in the Bistro where there would be some tasty sniglets to go along with our tasty wines. Looking forward to seeing everyone! It's been awhile since I have seen wine+art and his lovely wife Deb. She always seemed to be involved in some horsey event instead of partaking in the fruit of the vine with folks like us.
Tootles,
gcorkgal

I must admit, I'm curious as to who gcorkgal is... Big Grin

As for Deb and her horse, no shows for two weeks!

Okay, I do not want any "stuff" from all who know my opinion of Shiraz. Big Grin

For my 2nd wine, I was talked into Two Hands Lily's Garden Shiraz. (I think 2002) Eek

We wouldn't give you "stuff", only "guff". Wink

Thanks to win and champainfreak for putting this fun night together. If anyone noted the vintage of the J.C. Cellars syrah that B.S. brought, I'd love to know the year (vineyard too, if applicable). That was my WOTN. (Think it did get the most #1 votes overall.) Also, what was wine #13? Some ba$tard erased that from my notes. Wink Smile

Champainfreak and the staff at FarPointe busted their tails to make sure this was a nice tasting for us. Noisy venue, but, hey, that's often the case. Champainfreak must have some serious lactic acid build-up today after all the hopping up and down he did while pouring sixteen different wines for us. 14 declared/"planned" wines, plus two surprises.

It's always great to get to spend time with wine+art (Razz PurpleHaze Razz). And, it was a treat to finally meet Mrs. wine+art! She's lovely, smart, and, like me, is a bit nutty about animals. As for the folks who were "new" to me last night, I have a fellow movie addict in gcorkgal. Cool I wish I'd spent more time with B.S. He had a fun story to share about how he snared his wife, and he laughs easily. Our host win was fabulous company, and he refrained from smacking my hand while I was pilfering his crackers. Wink

I look forward to more of these north Dallas tastings!!! Big Grin

2003 Fess Parker's Vineyard Syrah

I need to get some notes out....for some reason I only had notes on 12 -- lost 4. We need to stop allowing people with erasers in to the tastings.... Big Grin

2003 JC Cellar’s Syrah – Fess Parker’s Vineyard. Personal 94 rating. Deep purple with a bouquet of raspberry and blue berries. Initial tasting revealed a hint of bacon fat (thanks for pointing this out M), with some vanilla being exposed on second taste 90 minutes later. The most multidimensional of the wines sampled. My WOTN, and overall WOTN with four 1st place votes. Only 372 cases made, of 100% Syrah from Santa Barbara.

2003 Marquis Philips Shiraz Integrity Personal 90 rating. Amazing deep red/purple color with a heavy texture that coated my glass and mouth. Blackberries and a hint of dark chocolate, and I could tell that it was well made, but young, but just not as unique as the JC Cellar’s. It was the 14th wine tasted, which with 14+% alcohol wines definitely affected my palette. I wonder what would have happened if it was sampled earlier in the night (JC was the 3rd wine tasted). I could tell that it was not from California, but I’m not exactly sure why….My 3rd place wine (Shafer Relentless was my 2nd place wine—can’t help it, I grew up in Northern California).

2003 Two Hands Lily’s Garden McLaren Vale Shiraz Personal rating 89. Very solid wine with the requisite deep red color that was fruit forward with red berry flavors of a good Australian Shiraz. I just did not pick up the layers of complexity that was exhibited by many other wines sampled tonight. It was tasted in the middle of the line up order and we only had it open for about 90 minutes—in hindsight, I wished we had initially tasted all of these wines right after we popped the cork. Overall 3rd place for the group. Middle of the pack for me.

Other wines sampled:

2000 Plumpjack North Coast Syrah
2003 Doyenne Syrah (Yakima)
2004 Copain Syrah Callioux & Coccinelle
2003 Novy Napa Valley Syrah
2003 Lincourt S Santa Barbara
2003 Clarendon Hills Hickinbotham
2002 Henry Holmes Barossa Shiraz
2002 Garretson Wine Co. Ausling
2000 Shafer Relentless
2003 Penny’s Hill Shiraz
2003 Limerick Lane 1023 Shiraz

Two others of the original 14 I had down as '03 Limerick Lane 1023 (#7 in the lineup) and a Penny Hill's wine (#11 in queue).

Win,

Thanks for getting the Far North Dallas group started!

For me, always nice to have a blind tasting of wines in a style I "think" are not my favorites. A good way to confirm my thoughts or to see if my palate has changed.

We only had one corked wine out of 16... not bad. Wink

I thought the WOTN was easy, and glad to see others agreed with the style. The J.C. Cellars was even better at the end of the evening than when we first had it.

My 2nd place wine (3rd overall) was the Two Hands that Ms. W+A brought which surprised me. Red Face I'm not a fan of wines from the land of Oz without age on them.

I had two wines scored the same for 3rd place. The '00 Relentless and the #9 wine Aislene (sp?).

I would have bet my paycheck that I could pick out the Integrity, but after 12 wines I was curious if I had "missed it." NOPE, here comes #14 and without question a wine that Parker would love. Eek

I need to get the name of the Champagne we had to end the evening with. Thanks to skosh for buying it as it was to be my treat, but she beat me to it. What a gal! Big Grin

Thanks again to win for a blind tasting!
