First time doing an OL--I wanted to start a group in north Dallas. Open to all feedback:
Details of OL Frisco Tasting: Theme: Syrah/Shiraz Note: most of the interest thus far has been on new world Syrah/Shiraz. May break out a second flight of old world Syrah if there is enough interest.
Thursday, April 13. Starts at 6:00 PM, with tasting starting at 6:30 PM
Will try to keep it to 10 people (16 people is the definite maximum).
Location: FarPointe Cellar Wine Bistro – corner of Legacy and 121 in Frisco (1125 Legacy, Frisco, Texas 75034 (214) 618-9882) http://www.farpointecellar.com
Format: Blind tasting, eventually choosing top 3 wines of the night. Bring one Syrah/Shiraz and Purchase one Syrah/Shiraz from FarPointe Cellar, located next door to the Wine Bistro. FarPointe has agreed to provide the participants of the offline with a discount on the bottle purchased—good selection of wines with quite a few at the $10-$15 range, with the reserve wines located at the back of the store in their humidity and temperature controlled cellar. FarPointe Wine Bistro will then waive all the corkage fees and provide the glasses as well as prepare and serve the wines for the blind tasting.
Wines for the tasting, thus far: 2004 Copain Syrah Callioux & Coccinelle 2002 Marquis Philips Shiraz Integrity

Because I am a CPA and because this is TAX SEASON, I can not make the April 13 tasting. I am interested in future offlines however. The Frisco location of Farpointe is great!!

I haven't yet been to FarPointe but will now plan to check out the store and bistro this week. After I've done my shopping, I'll be certain to post which wines I'll be bringing. (I'm having trouble searching FarPointe's online inventory, "the selections", at the moment. All I can obtain is the "new arrivals" info.)
Thanks for organizing this tasting, win. I look forward to meeting you and the other folks.
At first that struck me too. But, after taking a peek at another board where win posted this, it would appear he doesn't work for FarPointe. He's friendly with the wine manager there.
They're providing the venue, stems, setting up for the blind tasting, and letting us bring in one of our own bottles. I don't think it's out of line that they request that we purchase our second bottle (at a discount as it happens) from them.
While I imagine it's likely that win or someone will make mention of FarPointe's wine club and/or upcoming events , I don't anticipate anyone seriously putting the touch on us to buy wines there. However, if the evening turns out nicely, they have a good wine selection, and the prices are decent, I probably will purchase additional wine that night or another day. If so, good for them.
win, btw, you beat me to it. I usually bring the Washington wines. As for your other bottle, wow!
Hello...sorry for the slow response rate--just got back in town.
I'm glad you brought up your point, Hunter. I was wondering about the details from the wine bistro also--the manager suggested it, and after thinking about it, my logic went this way: The wine bistro would charge $20 for a corkage fee, or we could buy one bottle from them and waive the fee. I surveyed the store, and they had quite a few bottles of Syrah/Shiraz at under $20 a bottle that looked interesting, so I thought it may be better to have more wine to sample.
I am not affiliated with the wine bistro in any manner, other than being a customer. (sorry for the delayed disclaimer) Also, the wine bistro is very open to other arrangements in the future--I just wanted to get a new tasting group started closer to where I live.
But, again, thanks for the feedback, Hunter.

I'm in four groups now, but always room for more
Many who love vino in Big D!
I guess I'm officially in 2 but we have some many satellite groups, get togethers and such I can't really keep count!
You guys rule, when I go back to Texas I do not know how to tell my dad I am leaving to see people I only know from cyberspace. "Sorry Dad, you will have to go to Home Depot without me".

Skosh,
Do not forget we must also buy a wine to taste.
Looks like we are shaping up for a New World tasting so far. If that is the case, I will bring the Shafer or Viader, then pick out whatever at the store.
