Since we are all swayed by labels....How about a wide open selection tasted "blind".

I think this would be a surprising and fun time for all of us Wink , There are many ways to do this, but thought that i would throw the thought out for feedback.

P.S. Do not be afraid to be embarrassed Wink Big Grin !

Sounds quite interesting! Smile Everyone could make sure the complete foil is removed, and the bottles bagged and taped. Since each person knows what he/she brought, they would have to remove the cork and dump it, the cork, in the cork bag without anyone else seeing it. We could number each one with the color and an individual number, R4, W1, etc.

Anyone else have comments?

I am still to inexperienced to expect myself to be able to identify most wines accurately blind. However I would enjoy seeing how everyones favorites are effected by not knowing for sure what is in the glass. I have always said that I am not wild about Merlot, but at one blind tasting I was at, my favorite was a merlot. Surprising things can happen when tasting blind. Put me down in favor of the idea.

How do you disguise the bottle shape and weight?

bdamico,
The best and easiest way to handle it is to use other bottles (Generic bottles that can handle 750ml), Cost Plus has these and i would be more than happy to contribute them.

slateriesling,
Trust me when i say that i am not an expert and that this is nothing more than a great way of exploring other wine varietals without any pre-conceived notions or prejudices!

Just got back from Cafe Plaka discussing the final date and corkage fees. Saturday the 24th at 7:00 sounded like a good time.

The corkage is normally $15 per bottle, but for us it will be $10 for the first 10 bottles, $5 for the next 10, and nothing if we go over 20 bottles. Of course Chef Phillip will have to try a few tastes! Big Grin

Still haven't heard from the Norhern part of the state. Anybody coming down for this?

a whole night of blind tasting?? could turn tedious, imo...
maybe we could/should each bring one bottle for tasting blind and one for "regular" consumption?

TBird,
If you are apprehensive about doing a blind tasting then i assume we could change the format, but keep in mind the only thing that is changing/missing is the label....No more work, no less.

Let me know your thoughts!

I would propose that most, if not all, bottles be brought wrapped. I will make up tasting notes sheets, and we can vote for our top 3 WOTNs. After the results are tabulated, all wrapping come off. If you have a bottle that you want tasting "Unblind", such as possibly the January TAA, bring it on!
