Here are some more details regarding the August 11th Cellar Diminishment Party. As you will read, it is much more a party than a formal wine tasting. Picture a college house party with wine instead of kegs. The theme is basically, “I have way too much wine…but that’s what friends are for.”
GUEST LIST Scubarex (2) AllRed (2) Anwar/Trigirl DoktaP (1) Miser (2) Steve8 (2) Blue Oval (2) grossie (4) KSC02 (2) Vino Me (2) amici dell'enotria (2) francisS (2) french16 (2) MLV (2) newsguy (2) Emilio (2) Pinot Envy/Pinto (2) Thomas23162 (3) Stefania Wine (2) zepplan (2) Een (2) napaccoast(2) indybob (2) bman (2) Scott McDonald (1) Tastebuddy (2) rob a (2) Primordealsoup (2) LMA (1) chrisbhoo (1) chuq_2001 (1) cluricaunwines (2) Ken K (1) WAITING LIST: nil With neighbors and friends and my hockey team, there will probably be around 100 people there. START TIME 7:00 pm SET-UP The party will be both inside the house and in the backyard, where we’ll have a tent. I will have various “stations” throughout the house and backyard, where different varietals/regions will be featured (i.e. whites, syrah, pinot noir, cabs, Italian, zins, etc…). I will have a wine list to help everyone navigate. FOOD The CWM and my neighbors/friends (out-of-towners exempt) have been asked to bring an appetizer for the food table, which will be set up in the dining room. No need to overdo it here, maybe 15-25 portions. We just want enough for people to nosh on and help soak up the alcohol a bit. I would suggest a late lunch or early dinner before heading over to the party. In keeping with tradition, it’s more of a walk-around fest than a dinner party. Besides, Lady Vino Me usually brings a few dozen White Castle sliders for late-night microwaving if you are really starving around midnight. STEMWARE I am renting some 4 oz. wine glasses from a local store. They are the kind of glasses you might see at a wedding, or a retail tasting. They are not made of crystal, but are quite serviceable for small pours. Plus, I can just put them back in their plastic trays without washing and return them the next day. If you want to bring your own stems, go for it. LOCATION I live in the northern Chicago suburb of Northbrook. It’s about 20 miles north of downtown. You actually can find Northbrook on most maps. Please email me at m dot boersma at comcast dot net if you need my address and/or phone number. Please note that I will not have access to email between July 27th and August 5th. Going fishing in a remote part of Ontario where I am more likely to see a moose than a laptop. ATTIRE Casual. I usually wear jeans. Shorts, if it’s muggy. Actually, my rule of thumb at this thing is to wear something that I don’t mind spilling on. We can always crack a few more from my cellar if we run out. Looking forward to sharing a drink and a laugh with all of you. See you soon. I am very jealous of your schedule these past couple of weeks. Who do you fly out with? We used to go up with Northern Wilderness Outfitters off Rainey Lake. Have a great trip! _______________________________________________________________________ Wine is passion. It is family and friends, warmth of heart, and generosity of spirit. ~ Robert Mondavi |

Allred- After talking to Otis at dinner last Friday, I think this is a family road trip to a remote eskimo village.
Otis- That list is crazy. Dumbfounded by your generosity. By my calculations you are opening about 9% of the wines in your cellar. I don't even want to think about the cost of the bottles you're opening. VM |

Otis, I'll bring my wine and the Cabernet + likely some Chaine d'or. No need to open one of your bottles!

Wow! I agree with everyone else and the magnitude of your generosity. This will undoubtedly be a classic event of epic proportions.

Thanks for the kind comments, guys, but it really is my pleasure. I always enjoy my wine best when it's with people I like.
Stef Wine: Thanks, dude. Very cool of you to bring some of your tasty wares. AllRed: heading up to a Unabomber-type cabin around the tiny town of Ignace. Going for northern pike and walleye. DoktaP: shoot me an email if you need directions. As you may remember, my casa is very close to your old 'hood. Cheers, Otis |

Wha'??!! You're not opening any good bottles??!!
Looks like I'll finally get to taste a 99 Dead Arm - it's the only vintage I'm missing over the past 10 years. To quote Flounder in Animal House: "This is gonna be GREAT!" ------------------- Go Bruins!! Go Tigers!! Go Pistons!! Go Lions!! |

Otis,
To my delight my 23 year old son John expressed interest in attending. Is there room for one more? |

I wish I could have made it this year. In fact if the party was going to be the following weekend I may have been able to attend. I will be in dtown Chicago helping my girlfriend move her youngest son in to attend college at Columbia. With the wines mentioned I am sure it will be a gathering to remember. Enjoy.

LOL tyee! BTW, it's quite a coincidence that our trio of Canadians leads our team in penalty minutes (if you don't count my game misconduct incident).
Thomas: by all means, make it a family affair! I look forward to meeting John next weekend. IW: sorry the timing is off. Would have been great to have you join us (especially with the Arlington Million going on). Next time! bman: when you arrive, I'll personally guide you to the Dead Arm! Thanks for the kind offer Otis, I accept! Will the Aussies and Californians be in the basement again? If so, I may not need to climb stairs more than once....
Tom, forget about being coherent the next morning, this is like the First Growth offlines - no prisoners are taken! And I doubt that anyone will be alone with any bottle! ------------------- Go Bruins!! Go Tigers!! Go Pistons!! Go Lions!! |

WOW. That's really awesome. All of you that will be attending it appears will have an amazing experience. Can't wait for the reports!
Me: You don't think the wine opened after an hour or two? My gf: I liked it better when you first opened it. It was like getting hit in the face with a crowbar. Me: Two-buck Chuck is like getting hit in the face with a crowbar. My gf: Yeah, but this is a TASTY crowbar. "De can or Decant" - My gf |
