There is a possibility I may be in the area around October 6 - 10. Anyone interested in having an off-line in the area?

Which airport would be best to fly into?

Pyang!

Windsor is about a 3 hour drive from Toronto. I doubt that there is a terribly convenient way to fly from California to the local Windsor airport. Your choices are probably either to fly into Toronto or Detroit and drive to Windsor. The guy who would know best, I suspect, is bman. If memory serves, I believe he is a native of Windsor.

If your travel plans take you through Toronto, then we should easily be able to get a group together for an off-line. Keep us posted!

So, what brings you to Windsor? Is WineBid opening up a Canadian operation (he asks hopefully)?

Detroit airport is clearly the closest to Windsor (about a 1/2 hour drive). However, getting across the border via tunnel or bridge will add soem time to that (up to a couple hours, depending upon time of day).

Detroit would be the closest major airport as Windsor is just across the river. I think I may be in Italy during that time window, if not I wouldn't mind heading up there to throw some money away, both at the tables and at an offline.

Good point, madalex. When you factor in the time to cross the border by car, you may just be better off flying into Toronto!

How does an off-line in Toronto on the evening of Saturday, October 9th sound?

Slan,

Thanks for the logistic options. I think the chnaces are I'll be flying into Detroit then drive over to Windsor, looks to be much cheaper airfare.

Don't know how long the trip will be, I am hoping on getting up there to catch a WPBA 9-Ball tournament.

Well, you still won't be too far from Toronto, so if you have the chance, we'd be delighted to get a few forumites together for dinner and some wine if you can find the time to drop by Toronto.

We are having our first Detroit off-line this Saturday. By the time you get here we'll be ready for another.

The Detroit airposrt is your best choice. It isn't really that hard to get across the border. Best to have a picture ID (driver's license) and a certified copy of your birth certificate. You probably will not find any lengthy delays in crossing the boarder unless something unusual is happening. The tunnel is probably the easiest instead of the bridge.

Let us know if your dates firm up and we'll get something going.

BTW, Torontoites are welcome at the off-line Saturday night. Details are on this board.

I never thought I'd see the day when my hometown would be considered a bona fide tourist destination, but I guess casinos really do change everything!

My oldest/dearest friend on earth lives in Windsor, and has in fact registered for these forums, though I don't think that he's ever posted a single message. He would be the one to tell you where to eat, etc., as I've lived elsewhere for almost all of the past 30 years, and cannot even find much time to visit. He might be interested in an offline, but perhaps not bilaterally.

The one place to which many people travel from afar to eat is the Tunnel BarBQ. There are two locations, one at the exit from the Detroit/Windsor tunnel, the other on Huronchurch road in the Holiday Inn, just down the road from the Detroit/Windsor Ambassador Bridge exit. their ribs are justly famous, and they do a brisk business selling the rubs and sauces used on their ribs (and chicken, etc.). If you'd like to try a different kind of BBQ ribs and chicken, try it out.

Bruins rule!

It doesn't take that long to get accross at all. My brother-in-law's parents live just east of Winsdor (St. Clair Beach) off of the river and goes to visit at least once a week. He is my alchohol supplier if you know what I mean. Windsor is a hop, skip and a jump for me. Keep me posted.

Drivers license, birth certificate, and/or passport is a definate must.

We can try and plan something in downtown Detroit. There are alot of excellent restaurants in the city. Opus One, Whitney, Cuisine..Just to name a few.

Oh by the way. I use the tunnel bbq sauce all the time. Great stuff.

Cheers to GrapeFriends!

I was just going to book a flight to Detroit that I found earlier during the week for $148, but it's now gone...

Guess I will have to wait for the special to pop up again... Frown

pyang - another wine/dine option is The Lark, a restaurant that I and others have raved about her in the past. It's in the Detroit suburb of West Bloomfield, but easily reachable from Windsor. This is the place that topped Conde Nast's last ranking of the best restaurants in America, in 1995. The wine list tops 1,000 wines, and though the long-standing chef has left, I understand it is still great.

I'd be in for a road trip if we can't get pyang up to Toronto. I'll keep an eye on this thread for sure!

Just caught this thread -- I'm going to be moving to Windsor in a month or so. Would really appreciate any recos as it relates to restaurants, pubs, wine clubs, tasting groups... or where to live (looking to rent an appt for at least the first year)...
