Not at all, Longboarder. Its great that we have such a big turnout here. I've only had to make a couple of phone calls to St. John to sort it out, really very easy.

Thanks again for making the arrangements, Bobby. Cool

If my meeting wraps up on time, I should be able to make it by 6:45pm. I'll phone BirD if I'm running a little late.

Really looking forward to it. I've always wanted to go to this St John place after seeing a feature on it on Anthony Bourdain's TV show (it's about 2.5 minutes into the clip).

Don't worry about stems for me. I'll shove a couple O's in my carry-on bag.

Cheers,

Otis

Hey Bobby

Thanks for rearranging. I will bring the Rostaing Landonne as I think it's more drinkable at the moment than the Chapelle.

So how does one bring stems? I don't know how I'd get these to work and then the restaurant without them exploding!

Just to confirm, I will bring:

2000 La Landonne, Rostaing
1996 Morey Les Tessons
1977 Warre's

See you guys Friday. I should be there about 645 on the dot.

BirD

I am NEVER going to drink again. Except that I don't really mean that and have had a glass or two tonight...

BirD,

That is great with the stems. I will bring 4 so theres 10 right there. At the moment it looks like only 7 of us since Jody is still undecided. So Ampuis, KillerB, and Glenn, if you can scrape a few between you we should be good for 2 stems each.

To recap:

1995 Taittinger Comte de Champagne(me)
1999 Trimbach Pinot Gris Reserve Personnelle or 2004 Albert Mann Pinot Gris Grand Cru Furstentum(Longboarder)
2006 Beaucastel Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes(GlennK)
1996 Morey Meursault Les Tessons(BirD)
1977 Conti Costanti Riserva or 1985 Col d'Orcia Poggio al Vento(Longboarder)
2001 1er Cru Borgogne Rouge(Ampuis)
1999 Gran Reserva Rioja(Ampuis)
1995 Chateau Beaucastel(GlennK)
1998 Cote Rotie Jamet(me)
2000 La Landonne, Rostaing(BirD)
2002 Copain Eaglepoint Ranch Syrah(Otis)
1997 Ornellaia(Otis)
1988 Chateau Palmer(KillerB)
1977 Warre's(BirD)
Another Port(KillerB)
Mystery Bottle(Longboarder)

We have lots of wine to get through!! Cool

Nice lineup! I want to bring a white as well. I have a case coming of 2006 Beaucastel Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes that will hopefully get here before Friday. I’ll bring a couple of stems as well. Looking forward to it!

If anyone wants to borrow my liver I can send it over with Otis. It's well-worn, but still runs pretty well.

Sounds like you guys are in for a hell of a good wine time on Friday. I'm very jealous.

Not looking good for next year either.

All,

I believe have a split of 2001 La Tour Blanche in a dark corner hidden from the missus...do we need a small bottle of sticky?

also alas, my stems are non existant ... but I have 2 days to go, something may surface.

Should be a real doozy.

Well I just heard the Vieilles Vignes won’t make it to me by tomorrow. But I do have the regular 06 Beaucastel CDP Blanc that I will bring as a replacement.

Sounds good, Glenn.

I will check this thread before leaving for the restaurant, so if there are any problems post here or email bschandra1 at msn dot com. It may be nice for you guys to email me, and I can send you my mobile/cell phone.

The booking is under B. Chandra for 6:45pm, and we are only 7 at the moment but Jody may be a last minute addition.

See you guys tomorrow!

Good times last night. I had to go for a little run this morning to kill the hang over!

Great meeting everyone and special thanks to Bobby for setting up the restaurant. I would say my wines of the night were the 77 Conti Costanti and the 06 Beaucastel Blanc, but I don’t think we had a bad bottle in the group.

Longboarder, I don’t remember if I gave you my e-mail address: keelegl@gmail.com. Would love to get some of those recommendations for Italy.

Second the sentiment - great night all.

Morning? I didn't see morning today...

How is your nose, Killer? I heard you had a little accident on the way out of where ever you and Otis went after the restaurant.

WOTN was the Brunello - absolutely sublime. The '97 Ornellaia was also fantastic, as was the Palmer and the Ladoix. The Landonne was just coming out of its shell towards the end, will be great in a few years time.

Back in the States with 3 hours sleep on the plane. Feel like a new man.

Thanks again to BobbyC and BirDungy. You have to love it when a plan comes together. Great to meet Ampuis, GlennK, and KillerB. Otis, it is always a pleasure to drink with you.

The Palmer/Ornellaia pairing was excellent. Both wines were drinking well. The Palmer showed the classic Margaux nose and the Ornellaia was classy as well. I enjoyed both immensely. Choosing one over the other was like choosing which of your children you like the most.

The '77 Warre's was off the charts. A great contrast to the '80 Dow. The Rhone's (esp. the Jamet) were young but very powerful. The Costanti was in a special place and did not drink like a 32 year old wine. The nose was classic mature BdM, the color was ruby with only slight bricking at the rim and the fruit was very much alive and balanced with the acidity.

I will echo GlennK's note by saying there was not a bad bottle in the bunch (and there were bunches of wine).

What a great night.

Made it to Copenhagen, but it did require a complete re-boot of my system after KillerB and I embarked on a Guinness and Tequila bender at a nearby pub after the offline. Totally worth it, though. We had a blast. Cool

KillerB did take a spill on the way out of the pub at 3AM, tripping on an insidiously-placed step in the middle of the bar. Same one I tripped on earlier in the night. I think his nose was bloodied not broken. Just a flesh wound, I hope!

BobbyC: thanks so much for organizing this great event. The restaurant was a perfect venue. I especially enjoyed the duck hearts and venison shoulder.

The wines were truly special. My faves were the Costanti, Beaucastel Blanc, Orny, and La Landonne (which was really starting to sing after a couple hours of air).

It was a pleasure to meet you, Ampuis and Glenn. And it's always a hoot, LB and BirD. KillerB: sorry I couldn't answer the call to watch the Coventry game. I didn't get out of bed until 1:30pm.

Hope we can do it again sometime soon.

Cheers,

Otis

My goodness, a Great, Great night.
Thanks hugely bobbyc and BirDungy for setting this up..
Meeting you all, both locals and visitors, was outstanding.

Very mixed bunch of highly interesting wines on show.

My fave was the 1977 Warres which just sublime...closely followed by the 77 Brunello, the Ornellaia, and the Palmer, in no particular order.

The food was ecletic and very good, the seemingly fifteen portions(it was huge!)of Venison married well with the Palmer.

Safe journeys one and all...

What a great night. Great to see Longboarder, BirD, and Glenn again. Very good to meet Otis, KillerB, and Ampuis. What a heavy night. I really don't remember getting home, but I do know that I was on baby duty at 5am. THat wasn't great, especially after realising that I only made it home at about 1:30!

Otis well done for charging on, forget jet lag! The wines all showed very well. I enjoyed the starter of Taittinger Comte de Champagne. The 77 Costanti was my oldest and probably most memorable brunello experience. The 88 Palmer and 97 Ornellaia were both singing.

The 77 Warre was a real revelation for me. Just a beautifully balanced wine which was made obvious by the monster that was the 80 Dow. The Cote Rotie's were a long way off of being ready. The Jamet showing power and masculinity with the Rostaing La Landonne a bit more muted but eventually opening to show some nice finesse.

The highlight was definitely the company. It was a great time, and it would be nice to do this again in the not too distant future.
