It's time for again for the 18th Annual wine auction at SHCS. We've raised over $400K in the last 2 years. This yeare we have over 40 live lots including some of the very best in Napa Valley wine: Colgin, Harlan, Screaming Eagle, Swtichback, Viader, Far Niente, Juslyn, Vineyard 29, etc. I'd love to send anyone who's interested an advance copy of our catalog and take any reservations. It's this saturday, 10-1 at Charles Krug Winery, Main Street, St. helena from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Live begins at 4:00 pm. ASK ME ABOUT OUR PREVIEW DINNER, Friday 9-30 at Viader Vineyards.

It is completely wrong for you to solicit on behalf of a private school in THREE DIFFERENT FORUMS on this website.

Because it's wine-related, I actually don't have a problem with you posting about the auction in the Wine Conversations forum. The rest of your posts are overkill.

By the way, given the dire need for relief funds elsewhere in the U.S., don't you think it's kind of tacky to be looking for funding for a small private school at this time?

My goodness, so nasty.

All the schools in Napa valley use wine auctions as fundraising vehicles (public, private, religious, etc), it only makes sense and we attract wine buyers and collectors from all over the country. We aren't a small private school, we are part of the Catholic diocese of Santa Rosa and you might be interested to know that over 40% of our families attend the catholic school on scholarship; we have one of the lowest tuition rates in the entire napa valley AND the Catholic Charities and SR diocese has sponsored a family from Mississippi. This family has relocated just this week after losing everything durng Katrina. Parishioners and parents of the school have found them housing, jobs and a portion of the proceeds of our auction are going directly as a cash distribution to this family and many others. Each child in catholic school around the country is donating $1 to hurricane relief. With approixmiately 100,000 catholic schools, we just might make a difference. now, do you want to talk about wine or not.

According to the Private School Review-- and I'm sure you'll correct me if this information is wrong-- there are fewer than 150 students at the St. Helena Catholic School. If correct, that would make it a small school.

The school website shows this auction to be a fundraiser for the school. They have neglected to mention that the proceeds are going to be given to the Diocese in order to assist a family from Mississippi. That is where you're now suggesting the proceeds will go, right?

I guess the rest of your reply-- about the 40% scholarship rate, or the money that Catholic children from around the U.S. are contributing to relief efforts-- is an attempt to deflect my criticism of what YOU're doing to some greater vision of altruism that I had not mentioned in any way. The fact that "All the schools in Napa valley use wine auctions as fundraising vehicles..." is entirely irrelevant-- none of them have posted messages simultaneously in multiple forums; they probably know that it is simply not the right thing to do.

It's wrong to register on a discussion forum website for the sole purpose of promoting your agenda repetitively in inappropriate places. That's all I said.

I can't see it as being "so nasty," unless you're seeing something very rude or directly insulting, or perhaps somehow quite objectionable in what I've written. On the other hand, I find what you have done to be objectionable, and from your response above, indefensible.

"now, do you want to talk about wine or not." Well, you're not really here to talk wine, are you? Big Grin

all i did was try to get a plug in for the school's event. i don't think its tacky at all since i happen to see lots of events posted on websites like this one. i don't have an agenda at all, i think you, however, do. so, i'm moving on now. if you want specific information on about our wines, our auction or other auctions in Napa Valley, check out our webiste sthelenacatholicschool.org. as for the proceeds, this is the drill, after collecting live lots, the school targets a specific lot as fund-a-need. as i said in my message to you, a "portion" of the proceeds will go to this family. so, we will "raise the paddle" at lot number ____, and that $ will go entirely to those folks. i'm sure you get the picture.

Well, OK then, since all you're doing is "plugging a school's event" and you don't have an agenda, and you see nothing contradictory in those statements, I will give you a very small boost. Seriously.

Here is another wine website where you can notify participants about the auction. However, please do yourself a favour and only post the information one time.

Congratulations, schoolpimp. You're the first person ever to call Seaquam nasty.

Just one more sip.

I have to go with Seaquam on this. Multiple postings are unnecessary and the poster's screen name more than implies that his/her true intentions has NOTHING to do with wine per se. This is nothing more than a "solicitation," pure and simple. As Seaquam says, YOU'RE the one not here to talk wine. Might be very different if you were a regular poster, talked wine, made friends here, then made some mention of your auction.

A very prominent Napa wine family (and frequent poster here) also has fundraisers for his children's school. They NEVER solicit here, only on their web site and in mailers to their wine list subscribers.

Perhaps the multiple postings was too much, but give this person a flippin break. (S)he is just trying to post about a charity auction for a school! Yes, they are other needs out there also, but that certainly doesn't mean that the school's need should be ignored.

Your post was well received by me, I only wish I could attend. Please excuse the barbarians at the gate, they don't know their manners.

Tomtom, if you know much about netiquette, you should have a pretty good idea of which participant in this thread doesn't "know their manners." My issue isn't with the message-- read my first 2 paragraphs in this thread-- but rather with the means of delivery. That's all.

Don't worry Board-O, I would never apologize for you or anyone else. Just trying to point out to a well-intentioned, if not well practiced, poster that not every one is so serious as to jump on the slightest breach of "netiquette", at least when done in the name of charity. If you choose to call people "pimps" for asking for charitable donations, that's your call.

And Seaquam, your issue WAS with the message which is why you criticized her for holding a fundraiser "given the dire need for relief funds elsewhere."

So you know her intentions? I didn't realize you were psychic.

The term school pimp was used for the newbie flooding three fora.

I sure do love self-righteousness posing as altruism. Smile

Just one more sip.

Board-O, I tend to judge people by their actions more than their words and promoting a charitable cause to me is more noble than it is despicable. I guess one person's pimp is another's nobleman. Smile

TomTom..

For the record, I could not agree with you more. This is a public message board. People should quit acting as though their personal space has been trespassed upon, especially due to a post as benign and well intended as a school auction.

Believe it or not, many people paying the huge premiums for wines like Colgin and Screagle would prefer their money go to a worthy cause rather than some person on winecommune who simply buys his Screagle allocation and then personally profits from the flip.

An obviously well intentioned person putting their time into a fundraiser perhaps posted it in one too many forum. Big deal. The overreaction is absurd.
