VT2IT, Chicago is a great city. The key is to explore beyond the dreadful River North touristy stuff and the usual Michigan Ave. shopping and horrendous Navy Pier trip most people are told to make.

Een, I didn’t mean to disparage your hometown. It was intended as a bit of a joke. I actually find all cities fairly uninteresting, hence the residing in Vermont. Add to that the fact that both of my parent where from NYC, so I’ve spent a good deal of time there and have become somewhat jaded about any city being a big deal. That being said, the truth is that other than changing planes at O’Hare, and the couple of weeks I spent at a job in Schaumburg some 20 years ago, I have never been to your area. I’m sure my wife, who is much more interested in city “things” than I will force me into doing the whole tourist thing. So I am more than open to suggestions about what we should do when not consuming wine. I can see at least a few hours wandering around art museums in my future.

I can understand your dislike or disinterest in cities. From time to time I romance the idea of moving far away from people but I don't think that will really happen.

It just makes me sad when people visit anywhere and they are instructed to go around to all the most generic, touristy things and they come away assuming that a place is just one big American Girl Store, Gap or food court. Then, there are my inlaws who love that stuff and fear food from any place that is not a chain. But, I digress.

As it turns out, there's a very attractive case of vino I'm considering, but the shipper will not ship to MI. He WILL, however, ship to Illinois. As we're holding this grand shindig in Chi town, is there any kind soul that would allow me to ship the case to them and pick up the weekend of this fest? Roll Eyes Smile

I was planning on going to the supermarket for a couple of Cavit Pinot Grigios. Smile What is the theme going to be, 1997's? Depending on what is decided I may need to source something as I have very few pre 2000's that I have two bottles of.

Didn't we already decided that this was *not* going to be a magnum party? Assign tables and have people bring for the table. Then if people want to trade bottles - no big deal!

Not sure - except for the fact that my grammar in the original post was awful. Decided? Really?

Nice one.

I don't think there has been any deciding of consequence. And there is no "deciderer." Razz

I'd love to see there be 3 bottles of each wine so that all of us can drink the same thing, but understand that this may be a challenge. We do have a good bit of time to work on this, however. I also think that it'd be nice if the seating arrangements were somewhat random. Perhaps a drawing on the evening of the event to determine initial seating? Maybe even a mid-evening rotation?

I'd love to be at a table with skosh, Een, PURPLE, Trigirl, Mrs. Vino Me, Mrs. Redline, mona lisa vito and Mrs. VT2IT for the whole evening with all the aged Brunello, Barolo and Super Tuscans while you guys down ArieS tired Ruffinos and a case or two of Pinot Grigio, but it just wouldn't be fair to the rest of you suckers! Wink

Thoughts?

Not me! I just get this s___ started. Wink

Another thought. How about attendees posting the 10 Italian wines they'd most like to see show up at this event between $xx and $xxx. If we could come up with some target wines, we could see if they could be sourced either from our cellars or places where the provinence could be reasonably assured.

i.e. I'd love to have another crack at the 1997 Tignanello this year. I'm sure we could collectively come up with 3 bottles of this. etc. etc. etc.

From a logistics perspective, everyone already knows my opinion. Someone needs to make a decision, otherwise this will languish until the week before (of) the dinner(s).

Anyway, my attendance still depends on my teaching schedule, so who knows - maybe you guys won't have to put up with me this year!

It won't languish, trust me! So do you have some specific guidelines on how to sort this out? I mean, we can't all pick who we want to sit with and what we want to drink. That wouldn't make any sense. We do have several months to work this out.

When will you know your schedule, fut? It would be nice to put up with you 4 years straight!! Razz

Your wish is granted. Top 10 wines I'd most like to see (in no particular order). I leave the vintages up to whoever brings the wines provided they use good judgement:

Romano Dal Forno Amarone della Valpolicella
Gaja Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo
Gaja Barolo Sperss
Maculan Acininobili
Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT
Roberto Voerzio Barolo Capalot Delle Brunate Riserva
Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba
Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva
Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Vigna di Pianrosso
