I will visit your fair city for only 2 days/1night. Any wine store or restaurant recommendations?

dbw4. I'll assume that you are staying downtown? As you probably know, wine is sold by a the government owned Societe des Alcools (SAQ). There are stores all over the place but not all are equal. The most interesting one is the Signature store on Ste. Catherine St. in the Complexe les Ailes at the corner of University. It is only open past 6:00 pm two nights of the week, Thursday and Friday. This store has tons of old Bordeaux, port and Burgundy. There is another one at 440 Boulevard de Maisonneuve that has a greater selection of "everyday" wines and more recent releases.

Restaurants. Escape wouldn't be too happy if I didn't mention his, Time Supper Club.

Toque is a great one but they just moved so I haven't been to the new location yet.

Superb French at either Les Halles or Chez la Mere Michel but they are pricey.

Verses in the Hotel Nelligan in Old Montreal is great.

Bonaparte in Old Montreal is another excellent French restaurant.

Mess Hall is another of my favourites. It is in Westmount, which is about a $12 cab ride from downtown.

Tourists and business travellers are often pointed towards La Queue de Cheval or Gibby's. I cannot advise you strongly enough to avoid both. Insanely overpriced food and wine lists at both.

All of the above are in the downtown area so you can walk or get a short cab ride. If you are not staying downtown just respond and I can try and point you to a few places in that area.

Enjoy.

steve8...apparently I was one of those 'Tourists/Business Travellers' who was pointed the way (to Gibby's) when I was there a few years ago.
Wink
Was expensive alright...but great food!

C'mon Steve- Gibby's is a good restaurant. Expensive, yes, but good dining.

Let me throw Mediterraneo(sp?) into the ring here. Good dining, very lively.

********
Yes, but I came here for an argument.

Oh! Oh! I'm sorry, this is abuse.

Tyee and Grossie. I figured someone might call me on the Gibby's/Queue de Cheval comment. Both have very good food but there is so much better for less money, why put up with it. Not to mention the service at Gibby's. But it's their winelists that piss me off more. 3 to 4 times mark-up. I refuse.

Mediterraneo. A year ago I would have mentioned that right after Toque but it closed down and then reopened. New ownership I believe. Not sure and I haven't been there since the re-opening so I left it out.

I had dinner at La Queue de Cheval a couple of months ago. I can't recall the pricing (and I was a guest), but the food was quite good.

Steve8,

... my office is at 600 Maison-nueve, so the 440 store sounds right. I am staying at the Marriott Champlain. Originally this was to be a mid-week trip, so I thought I'd be able to squeeze an extra night in....

Oh Well.

Thanks for the pointers, maybe I can drop a little "expense money" at The Supper Club. Where is it? I don't remember if Escape posted the address, I do remember he supplied a link to it some time in the past.

dbw4 would love to have you here as posted on another thread. I don't care about the $$$, would simply be nice to crack a bottle with a fellow forumite. Perhaps Steve8 will join us for a bottle as well. BTW steve8, I posted that the Altesino 97 Reserve was on the shelves. Did you see? I may go for a bottle, let me know if you have an opinion.

I'm always interested in sharing a bottle of wine. I wasn't sure whether dbw4 had a business dinner?

As for the Altesino Riserva, I'm waffling on it. Although I know if I wait much longer the decision won't be mine to make.

On our last two visits to Montreal, my wife and I have enjoyed Chez Queux at 158 Rue Saint-Paul E (in the Old Port section of the city) They have a very nice wine list, and the wine steward is a lot of fun to talk to.

Another place we enjoyed was Chez La Mere Michel at 1209 Rue Guy.

When in doubt, open another bottle.

997 St. Jacques West, corner of De la Cathedrale. So the 7-7:30 time is updated from his earlier 6-6:15 ETA? See you there.
