I'm sure they're long gone by now. I did a double-take myself when I saw "2003" on the bottle in the store. The product consultant assured me that there would be a regular allocation of the '03 in the fall.

I was initially disappointed in getting only a single bottle myself, but once I thought about it, I figured there's no point in drabbing a bottle this early, anyhow.

If the 2003 Dead Arm is released in the fall thru the catalogue as per usual, I'm sure we will all end up with lots of this.

I have ended up with 18-60 bottles (split with many of you) of every vintage since 1998, excluding 2001, so it is easy to get this stuff if you are creative. Wink Big Grin

Lets hope that RP and WS hate it! Big Grin

Damn, I wish I had seen this thread before! I think it would be fun to hear Chester Osborn talk about their wines.

I'll give Vintages a call tomorrow to throw my hat into the ring, but it doesn't sound likely at this point.

No one loves d'Arenbergs more than I, and offlining again with you lot and meeting Chester Osborne would have been worth it, but otherwise I would probably not have attended because the reds being poured are so young. It would have been better if they'd offered at least one fully mature old Dead Arm or something else that is at its peak, or something that has not previously been offered widely in Ontario like the Sticks and Stones or the Feral Fox.

This morning I got told that this event is all sold out, with lots of people on the wait list, and they are taking no more names. Too bad. Frown

OTW,

I added my name to the waiting list just as they sold out so I will let you know if I get a call. If I do, I will get a ticket for you.

I am confused as to why there is a waiting list for an event that is sold out and tickets are non-cancellable. Confused

I'm in, sort of...

On Sunday Sept 18, Churchill Cellars and En Ville Catering are sponsoring a wine tasting and barbeque with Chester Osborn at Fort York. It starts at 4:00pm and a variety of d'Arenberg wines will be served - but they have not committed to a specific list yet. The cost is $50.

I don't know if this is a difficult-to-get ticket or not, because I got 2 tickets through an insider contact. But the price seems good and I'm mainly interested because I want to meet Chester Osborn, so I can't lose. And given that it is hosted by Churchill for their clients, I'm sure the wines will be a good selection.

OTW,

I'm glad you will get to meet him and try the wines. I will let you know if I get the call for a cancellation.

OTW: please say hello to Mark "Sparky" Donaldson for me if he's there, and tell him that I'm still hoping to meet him at a future Ottawa Food and Wine Show.

In 2003 I went to a d'Arenberg event in Boston at $100/head. To address some questions, they did pour some "surprise" older wines, including something about 15 years old euphemistically called "Burgundy!" They might have "port" too!

Also, they sold onsite some signed mags of Dead Arm. The event was well worth the price of admission, and we pay a lot more for d'Arenberg in the States.

Waiting for kids to grow up so I can get back to attending offlines

My Monday is starting to get pretty crazy and there is a chance I might not be able to make it. I know there is a waiting list for the event, but if anyone has any interest in taking my place, then please let me know. If there is interest, then I will give up my spot. If not, then I will wait to see how Monday unfolds before figuring out if I can make it.

Thanks for the offer. I would have taken you up on it, but there's a couple of us going to the Sunday affair at Fort York and it wouldn't be fair for me to bail on that now.

I hope your day comes in easier than expected and that you enjoy the dinner.

Well, I made it to the event although I was exceptionally rude to Baird and Basecadet as I had to spend a good chunk of the evening standing outside the restaurant talking on my cell phone! Sorry, guys. Red Face

My WOTN was the 2002 Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by the 2003 Dead Arm. I also enjoyed the Laughing Magpie and the Stump Jump Riesling, but I didn't much care for the others. The food at George was outstanding.

I forgot this was happening. Now I understand why d'Arenberg has had a ton of releases lately .... not a bad thing mind you as I enjoy many of their wines.

Slan, did they decant either the 03 DA or the 02 Coppermine Rd? I have good tannin tolerance but the 01 or 02 DA is the only wine I couldn't get .... very tough.

mwaters, they were both decanted (not sure for how long) and both were very tight. The Coppermine was my WOTN as well, the dead arm was close behind.

This message has been edited. Last edited by: basecadet,

Not at all. It is sometimes unavoidable.

I agree 100%. The food was amazing, the Copermine is going to be a great, Bordeaux like wine in 5+ years and the '03 DA was also potentially excellent. I have no idea how Steiman can rate this 86 points as it is so tight, who can tell what it well be like when it opens up? Also, I didn't catch the herbal notes that he mentions in his TN. It is clearly a 90-93 point wine. 90 for now for me.

Al,

No broken stems, but I wanted to pound the idiot sitting next to Basecadet over the head with a decanter of Dead Arm. Obnoxious clown. Big Grin

mwaters,

The wine was decanted at 6:00pm and served around 9:00pm so 3-3.5 hours in decanter.
