I coul dbring perhaps an Aglianico (Barolo-like but from Southern Italy or I could bring an Australian Shiraz). It will certainly be a celebratory mood for me as I just passed the 3-part exam for Certified Sommelier for Court of Master Sommeliers. Looking forward to meeting this Thursday.

An important question for TBird since he normally doesn't make it to the reds conscious.

Guys. I can't believe this. The last 3 weeks I had it in my head and on my calendar that this was Wednesday - even though I posted earlier when it was set for Thursday. I'm an idiot. I can't go Thursday. We are having a bday dinner party for my daughter at my house.

A million apologies.... Frown

Guys, I may not make the offline on Thursday. Unfortunately, our dog Bear died suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep on Saturday night. It feels like we're in a nightmare we can't wake from.

At any rate, if we feel up to it, we'll both be attending. If not, I'll have to regretfully bow out. I'll let everyone know tomorrow.

Well Terra and I talked about it, and we feel up to it... so we will be there on Thursday. Plus, it'll be good to get out of the house for a bit. Now the only question... what to bring? I'm thinking a 2003 Gemstone Facets and maybe 2004 Copain Broken Leg Syrah?

Check out my stuff on CT and let me know. The updated list...

Date: Thursday, August 9
Time: 6:30PM
Location: Smith and Wollensky
Corkage: $0. (But we can't bring a bottle on their wine list. I have it, so if you want a copy, email me... mattwagner 'at' comcast 'dot' net.).

Confirmed
tlily (2)
Tbird (2)
mwagner (2)
differentdave (1)
sprnplr (1)
$10kid (2)
John, in NYC (1)

What's everyone else bringing?

OK, just finished looking through CT. If the Copain and Gemstone don't sound appealing, I can also bring...

2003 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor Puente Alto
1998 Château Faugères
2004 Mitolo Shiraz G.A.M.
2002 Viader Proprietary Red
2004 Vision Cellars Pinot Noir

mwagner: terribly sorry to hear about your loss. glad that you two decided to get out and socialize. if you haven't done so yet, open up a special bottle soon and spent a night reminiscing about Bear. it'll do you all some good.

I vote for the Mouton... only because I've never had a first growth.

I'll be bringing the Gemstone, which is a cab blend. If we want more, I can always bring the Viader. I think tlily said he was bringing his cab too... but I can't find that post.

Mwagner7700:

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. I empathize as I went through it a few times sadly to say. As several others have said above, it is good that you are still coming out for this event.

I plan to bring a Shiraz and the Aglianico. The only reason I might choose different wines is if I am going to be out and about all day for business (including New Jersey part of the early afternoon), thus perhaps just buying wine on my way to dinner as a way to avoid carrying the bottles around.

I look forward to meeting you all Thursday this week.

I also would vote for the Mouton (although I have had 1st growth once before). There will be enough cali.

So 1st growth it is. It wound up being a 1997 Rothschild, which I just stood up after 6 plus years in hibernation. Should be a good evening. Mass transit it is for me.
See everyone tomorrow night, might stop off at Morrell and Co b4 if anyone is interested While they are over priced, they often do have some hard to find gems.
